"Bethtingalw"

Is it a cowl?
Is it a scarf?
Is it a collar?
Nope...it's what we in Wales would call a "Bethtingalw" - a "whatdyoucallit".

Basically it's a bit of simple knitting and a snazzy technique.

Materials:

Chunky yarn - although you could use any yarn really, just work out your measurements.
A Large button.
Size 9mm needles.
Tapestry needle.

Tension: 12sts x 8 rows in 10cm working in garter stitch.

To Make:

Cast on 24 sts
Continue to garter stitch (knit on every row) until your work measures around
42cm.

Button hole row: k7, k2tog, yf, k to end of row.

Knit 6 more rows.

Cast off 15 sts and fasten off and you are left with 9 live sts:

Here comes the fun bit. Start unravelling the live sts that are left.

Place the scarfy-thing around your neck and decide where you want the button, add one and off you go!

Transformed

My son who is 5 years old is naturally a big fan of Transformers and after knitting one hat and didn't like the way it turned out, decided to have a go at my own.

Materials.

*2 balls of DK yarn in 2 contrasting colours, (eg I have used orange and green.)
One will be known as MC (main colour) and the other as CC (contrast colour).
* 5, 3.75mm DPN needles or if you prefer a short circular needle, but you'll probably need the DPNs anyway when it comes to decreasing.
*Stitch marker
*Tapestry or wool needle.

Off we go!

Cast on 132 sts, and share them out evenly between 4 needles.
Being careful not to twist the sts, join in a round. Place a stitch marker at the beginning of the round and cont knitting for 6 rounds in MC.
Join CC and knit 2 rounds.
2 rounds in CC
2 rounds in MC

Commence "Transformer" chart with both colours being careful not to pull the yarns too tight.

Knit 2 rounds in MC
2 rounds in CC
2 rounds in MC
2 rounds in CC
Continue in CC as the main colour and MC as the contrast colour and work "Autobot" chart.

Knit 2 rounds in CC
2 rounds in MC
2rounds in CC and at the same time begin decreases as follows.

1st: K12, K2tog, rep til end
2nd and all alt rows: K all sts
(change to MC)
3rd: K11, K2tog, rep til end
5th: K10, K2tog, rep til end.

Continue in this way until you have 7 sts remaining.
Using a wool needle, gather these sts together and fasten tightly.

Weave in all ends.

Upsy Daisy Toddler Hat

Size: toddler 2-3yrs

Materials:

50g of DK yarn, I used cotton.
16″ circular needle and 4 or 5 dpns for when knitting gets too small for the needle. I used size 4mm
stitch marker
Tapestry/wool needle
2 smaller dpns for "petals"

Hat

Cast on 84sts, join, being careful not to twist the sts.
Continue knitting all rounds until hat measures 4" from the cast-on row.
Begin the decreases as follows, switching to DPNs

(Decrease) Row 1: *K10 K2tog*
Row 2: K all sts
(Decrease) row 3: *K9 K2tog*
Row 4: K all sts
(Decrease) row 5: *K8 K2tog*
Row 6: K all sts

Decrease in this manner until there are 35 sts on the needles.
Then decrease in the same manner, omitting the knit rows, until there are 7 sts remaining.
Pull yarn through the last 7 sts with a tapestry needle, pull through to inside and weave in ends.

Petals

With the smaller DPNs, push through centre of three sts about half way up the hat:

Knit about 10 rows (or whatever you prefer) of icord: i.e knit three sts, but instead of turning work, slip the sts to the other end of the dpn and bringing the yarn around the back of work knit 3 sts again.

Continue until you feel you have enough petals.

IgglePiggle Toddler Hat

Size: Toddler 2-3yrs

Materials:

50g of DK yarn, I used Baby acrylic.
16″ circular needle and 4 or 5 dpns for when knitting gets too small for the needle. I used size 4mm
stitch marker
Tapestry/wool needle

Ear Flaps
With 2 dpns CO 7 stitches.
Row 1: K1, P to last stitch, K1.
Row 2: K1, Kfb, K to last 2 stitches, Kfb, K1.
Repeat these two rows until there are 15 stitches on the needles.

Knit straight until piece measures 2.75″
Cut yarn, leave the earflap on its DPN.
Repeat for second ear flap.

Hat
Using a cable cast on, CO 14 stitches on the circular needle. Knit the 15 stitches from first ear flap, then CO 30 stitches. K15 from second ear flap, then CO 14

Join, being careful not to twist stitches, place marker and begin knitting in the round. As you knit around this first row, you’ll notice four gaps, on either side of each ear flap. When you get to those, K2tog to close them up. At the end of the round, you should have 84 sts on the needles.

Continue knitting all rounds until hat measures 4" from the cast-on row.
Begin the decreases as follows, switching to DPNs

(Decrease) Row 1: *K10 K2tog*
Row 2: K all sts
(Decrease) row 3: *K9 K2tog*
Row 4: K all sts
(Decrease) row 5: *K8 K2tog*
Row 6: K all sts

To make tassels:

Take some red yarn, I have used 4ply acrylic, and wrap around 3 fingers, with a tapestry needle, secure at the base of tassel by winding yarn around.

Make 4 in this way, descending in size and attach to the top of the hat.

Knit-ochet Choker

For Pendant:

Materials

any 4 ply is fine, I used Wendy Peter Pan.
2.mm needles

Cast on 20 sts
1. (WS) K
2. K8, K2tog twice, K8
3. P7, P2tog twice, P7
4. K6, K2tog twice, K6
5. K all sts
6. K5, K2tog twice, K5
7. P4, P2tog twice, P4
8. K3, K2tog, K3
9. K all sts
10. K2, K2tog twice, K2
11. P1, P2tog, P1
12. K2tog twice.

Leave rem 2 sts on a needle.

For choker

Materials:

Again, any 4 ply is fine, I used the same yarn as the pendant.
size 4mm hook.

1. Ch 40
2. sk 1st ch, dc into the rest (39), ch1 and turn,
3. dc 19, join pendant by placing the 2 rem sts onto the hook, dc as normal, pulling yarn through all loops, dc 19.
4. Fasten off

Add beads to decorate and choker clasp at each end.

Crochet Little Slippers

This pattern is for a size 6 UK, it's a simple pattern so adaptable for other sizes.

Conversion Chart

Materials:
Any DK yarn,
4mm crochet hook,
Removable stitch marker,
Wool/tapestry needle,
1 button.

Tension:
14 ch X 16 rows per 4" square across DC worked in a round.

Toe Shaping.

1. Ch 6
2. Dc all around (12 ch)Place a removable marker at end of round and move up on each round.
3. Inc 1 dc at each end of toe shaping (Dc 1, 2Dc in same ch, Dc 2, 2Dc in same chain, Dc 1) X 2 (16 ch)
4. Dc all around

Rep rounds 3 and 4 until you have 32 ch (or until the toe of your slipper comes to the base of your toes.

At end of this round, Dc 4, ch 1 and turn.

5. Dc 24 (i.e 4 from left upper, 16 of the sole and 4 from right upper. You will work back and forth on these 24 chains only until the sole reaches where your ankle and feet join, remembering to ch 1 before turning.

e.g

6. Inc 1 ch at each end of slipper, (26 ch)
7. Dc all
8. rep rows 6 and 7 once more (28 ch)

Begin Heel Shaping

9. Dc 9, Dc 2 tog, Dc 6, Dc 2 tog, Dc 9.
10. and alt rows, Dc all.
11. Dc 8, Dc 2 tog, Dc 6, Dc 2 tog, Dc 8.
13. Dc 7, Dc 2 tog, Dc 6, Dc 2 tog, Dc 7.
Cont. in this way until sides can be joined at the back when stretched slightly.

14, Turn back/heel inside-out and join seam with Sc.

Fasten off.

15. Join yarn at back of heel and Dc all around the slipper, join with first Dc with Sl St and fasten off.

Strap

From start of side shaping, join yarn and Dc 4 (working towards the back of slipper.

Dc back and forth ( ch 1 before turning) until strap is long enough to reach over the foot when slightly stretched.
Make button hole: Ch 4, Dc into last Dc and fasten off.

Add button to opposite side, weave in ends then start the next one, remembering to mirror the first.

Crocheted Snowflake Card

To make Snowflake:

Materials:
Size 4.00mm crochet hook,
Cream cotton, 4 ply,
Gold thread.

Instructions:

1. Ch 6, Sl into first Ch, to make a ring.
2. Dc 15 times, Sl into first Dc, Ch 1, turn.
3. 2Dc into each of previous Dcs, (30sts), Sl into first Dc, Ch 1, turn.
4. *Dc 2, (Dc, Ch 5, Dc) into next Dc, rep from * 8 times, Dc 2, Sl into first Dc, bind off, leaving enough thread to attach the snowflake to the card.

After making the snowflake, it's time to prepare the card.

Materials:
Card,
Steel ruler,
Sharp craft knife,
Something circular big enough to fit your snowflake in,
Tapestry needle,
And a small amount of sticky tape.

Fist, cut the card to the size you need it, this depends on the size of your snowflake, then fold in half and score down the middle.

Place your circular item on the card where you want your snowflake to be, i.e, not necessarily in the centre. Draw around it, then carefully, with your craft knife, cut it out.

Push the tapestry needle into the card to make a small hole where you with thread your snowflake, once you have threaded the snowflake to the card, letting it dangle slightly,

then on the inside, use a small amount of sticky tape to hold the thread in place.

There you have it, decorate it, or leave it simple, the rest is up to you.

"Soler" Socks (Toe-Ups:2socks on 1circular).

Materials:
5mm Circular needle (the longer the better)
I used 1 strand of 4ply cotton and 1 strand of a 4ply acrylic yarn.
(Naturally, if you choose to use a smaller yarn, you will need a smaller needle)

Method:

Cast on using the figure of eight method you will find useful instructions and photographs here.

(Also use the instructions on these pages for the knitting of socks on circular needles (Magic Loop) method)

continue to increase sts until you have 22sts each side of sock, (44sts for each sock)

Decide which side you will use as the sole, and which will be the upper.

For the sole sts, continue in stocking stitch.

For upper sts, use this pattern.

1st: *K10, P1, rep from * to end.
2nd and every alt row: *K10, P1, rep from * to end.
3rd: As 1st
5th: *K1, (yon, K1) x3, (K2tog tbl) x3, P1, rep from * to end.
7th: *K1, (K1, yon) x3, (K2tog tbl) x3, P1, rep from * to end.
9th: As 5th.
11th: As 7th.
13th: As 5th.
15th: As 1st.
17th: As 1st.
19th: *(K2tog) x3, (K1, yon) x3, K1, P1, rep from * to end.
21st: *(K2 tog) x3, (yon, K1) x3, K1, P1, rep from * to end.
23rd: As 19th.
25th: As 21st.
27th: As 19th:
28th: As 2nd.

Rep this pattern for sock upper (continue to St St for sole) until required length has been reached and the sock has covered your foot and has reached your leg.

Heel:

Working on one sock at a time:

Row 1: *Sl1, K1* repeat across the 22 sole sts
Row2: P
Repeat these 2 rows for 22 rows or until the heel flap is the length you want it. Ending on a WS row

Turn the Heel:

1. Starting on the right side, knit halfway across the heel flap 11 sts. Sl1, K1, psso. K1. Turn.
2. P until you reach the st before the gap, P2tog, P1. Turn.
3. Sl1, K across to the gap (where you turned), slip the first stitch before the gap, K the stitch on the other side, psso, K1. Turn again.
4. P across to the gap. P2tog across the gap. P1. Turn.
Continue in this way until all the heel flap stitches have been used up.

Gusset:
Pick up and knit 12 sts from the side of heel flap.
Pattern across the 22 stitches that were held aside for the top of the foot.
Pick up 12 stitches down the next side and knit across heel sts
Round 1: knit all stitches,
Round2: knit to within 3 stitches of the end the picked up sts, K2tog, K1, pattern across the upper sts to the picked up sts on the other side of heel, K1, SKP, knit to the end.

Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until you have a total of 44 sts.

Repeat these steps for the second sock.

Leg:

Knit lace pattern as used for the Upper until leg length required is reached.

Cuff:

Knit 6 rows K1, P1 rib, cast off in rib.

Candy Cotton Bag

Materials:

2 50g skeins Cotton Tape.
1 pair 6mm straight needles.
2 5mm Double pointed needles.
Tapestry Needle for making up.

Tension:

16 1/2 sts x 21 rows per 10cm square.

Front:

Cast on 32sts.
St St 12 rows
St St 7 sts on either side of grid pattern below, reading K rows right to left and purl rows left to right.

St St 12 rows.
Cast off.

Work Back in same way.

Lace Flap:

Worked lengthways on 9sts.

Cast on 9sts.

1st row: cast on 2 sts, cast off 2 sts, leave st on right needle and K across rem 8 sts.

2nd row: K3, K2tog, yf, K2tog, (yf, K1) twice.

3rd row: K

4th row: K2, (K2tog, yf) twice, K3, yf, K1

5th row: K

6th row: K1, (K2tog, yf) twice, K5, yf, K1

7th row: Cast on 2 sts, cast off 2 sts, place st on right needle back on left, cast on 3 sts, cast off 3 sts, place st back on left needle, cast on 2 sts, cast off 2 sts, leave st on right needle and K across rem 11 sts.

8th row: K3, (yf, K2tog) twice, K1, K2tog, yf, K2tog

9th row: K

10th row: K4, yf, K2tog, yf, K3tog, yf, K2tog

11th row: K

12th row: K5, yf, K3tog, yf, K2tog

Rep this pattern three more times or to required length ending on a 1st row.

Strap:

With 2 5mm DPNs, Cast on 7 sts and commence i-cord pattern.

K across 7 sts, but instead of turning work, slip sts to other end of needle, K across the sts, every now and then pull on knitted work.
Cont in this way until required length is achieved.

Make Up:

I find it easier to wash and press pieces before making-up.

Felted Bowl.

Measurements:
The base of the bowl measures 16cm across, and is 6cm deep (although felting is pretty unpredictable!)

Materials:

This was made with a:
100g skein of Colinette Point 5 Chunky Pure Wool in colourway "Turquiose 21" and a
50g ball of Classic Adriafil "Ibiza" 100% Cotton.
1 pair of UK size 7 1/2 straight needles.
Tapestry needle for seam.

To Make:

Cast on 70 sts with the Colinette,
Join Adriafil and St St (stocking stitch/stockinette) 2 rows,
St St 4 rows in Colinette,
Repeat these 6 rows once more.

Keeping this stripe repeat, *K7, K2tog, rep from * to last 7 sts, K6, K2tog. (62sts)
Next row and all alt rows: Purl
Next: *K6, K2tog, rep from * to last 6 sts, K4, K2tog. (54 sts)
Next: *K5, K2tog, rep from * to last 5 sts, K3, K2tog. (46 sts)
Next: *K4, K2tog, rep from * to last 4 sts, K2, K2 tog. (38 sts)
Next: *K3, K2tog, rep from * to last 3 sts, K1, K2tog. (30sts)
Next: *K2, K2tog, rep from * to last 2 sts, K2tog. (22sts)
Next: *K1, K2tog, rep from * to last st, K1. (15 sts)
Next: *K2 tog, rep from * to last st, K1. (8 sts)

Break yarn and thread through the remaining sts and pull tight.
Sew seam and place item in washing machine (I put it on 60 degrees) with another item of clothing for agitation.

When finished, block over a bowl to obtain a good shape.

Pockets.

When my husband asked if I could make something to hold three remote controls I was sat at my knitting machine, tenderly giving her the once over. I thought it would be a good exercise for her and for my brain! I hadn't had the machine out for a long time.

I ended up with this.

Pattern:

I used 1 strand of a natural coloured cotton and one strand of a beige chenille, (both are for knitting machine use) but knitted them together to give a firm fabric, so the loosest tension is best.

CO 40 sts.

K 20 rows

*Place 6 needles at each end into holding position (so only 28 needles are in working position) remember to change the carriage from N to H.

(use weights to keep tension in the fabric being knitted)

K60 rows.

Cast off the working sts and push flap to the back.

Change carriage from H to N

CO the centre sts again (all sts in working postion)

**K 70 rows.

Repeat from * to ** another two times.

K 10 rows and cast off.

Sew the gaps at base of each pocket, and sew edges.
